Yellow Alert Stories

Jane's Story

“Our daughter had jaundice within the first 24 hours, pale stools and dark urine within three days. She also had a swollen abdomen and raised veins. The midwife said all these things were normal and not to worry. At three weeks she was sleeping all the time and struggling to have 1oz of milk. Finally I took her to A&E where we were transferred to the children's ward who couldn't believe all these signs had been ignored. Leeds were consulted and Sophia was subsequently diagnosed with biliary atresia and given a Kasai when she was four weeks old.

Sophia’s skin wasn’t even that yellow but her eyes were  - they even had a green tinge by three weeks. But this just shows that the jaundice doesn’t have to be so awful for it to be liver disease. I know that it is rare in babies but it’s vital that health professionals are all aware so that they can spot the danger signs.”
